Understanding NAT Types on PS5

Network Address Translation (NAT) type determines how your PS5 connects to other players online. Different NAT types affect your gaming experience, connection quality, and ability to join multiplayer sessions.

See the standard NAT ↔ PS5 mapping in the homepage FAQ

NAT Type 1 (Open)

Best connection with no restrictions. Ideal for gaming and hosting.

NAT Type 2 (Moderate)

Good connection with minor limitations. Suitable for most gaming scenarios.

NAT Type 3 (Strict)

Restricted connection that may cause gaming issues and connectivity problems.

How to Change NAT Type on PS5

Access your router's admin panel by typing its IP address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) in your web browser

Log in with your router credentials (check the label on your router if you haven't changed them)

Navigate to the 'Advanced' or 'Network' settings section

Find the 'UPnP' or 'Universal Plug and Play' option and enable it

Save the settings and restart your router

On your PS5, go to Settings > System > Console Information > Network to check your new NAT type

How to change your NAT type on Xbox, PC, and PS4

The same three methods — enabling UPnP, setting up port forwarding, and using DMZ — also work on Xbox (Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S), PS4, and PC. Below are specific notes and ports.

How to change NAT type on Xbox (Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S)

Required Xbox Live Ports

TCP:80, 443, 3074
UDP:88, 500, 3074, 3544, 4500

Enable UPnP in your router. If UPnP isn't available, configure port forwarding for the Xbox Live ports to your console's IP.

On Xbox, go to Settings > General > Network settings > Test NAT type to verify.

If your NAT remains Strict, try DMZ for your Xbox IP (advanced) or contact your ISP if CGNAT is in place.

How to change NAT type on PC

  • UPnP is the simplest. If you port forward, forward the ports required by your specific game platform (e.g., Steam) or game.
  • Set a static IP (or DHCP reservation) for your PC to keep rules stable.
  • Firewall: allow inbound rules for your game's ports and for the game launcher.

How to change NAT type on PS4

  • Use the same PSN ports as PS5 (TCP 80, 443, 3478-3480; UDP 3478-3479).
  • Enable UPnP first; if needed, configure port forwarding or DMZ.

How to change NAT type from Strict to Open

Power cycle your modem/router, then retest.

Enable UPnP. If unavailable or ineffective, set up port forwarding to your device.

Assign a static IP or DHCP reservation to avoid rules breaking after reboots.

As a last resort, use DMZ for the device. If still Strict, contact your ISP to remove CGNAT or provide a public IP.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

My NAT type is still Type 3 after following the steps
Try restarting both your router and PS5. If the issue persists, contact your internet service provider as they may have additional NAT restrictions.
I can't access my router's admin panel
Make sure you're connected to your router's network. Try common IP addresses like 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, or 10.0.0.1. Check the router label for default credentials.
UPnP is enabled but NAT type hasn't changed
Some routers require a complete power cycle. Unplug your router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait 5 minutes before testing your PS5 connection.
Port forwarding isn't working
Ensure your PS5 has a static IP address or DHCP reservation. Dynamic IPs can cause port forwarding rules to stop working.

Test Your Current NAT Type

How to change NAT type to Open?
Start with UPnP. If that fails, use port forwarding for your platform's ports and set a static IP. As a last resort, place the device in DMZ. If you're under CGNAT, ask your ISP for a public IP.
Why is my NAT type Strict on Xbox?
UPnP may be off, ports aren't forwarded to your console, or your ISP uses CGNAT. Enable UPnP, forward Xbox Live ports (TCP 80,443,3074; UDP 88,500,3074,3544,4500), or request a public IP.
How to change my NAT type on PC?
Enable UPnP on your router. If needed, forward the specific ports for your game platform/game to your PC's static IP, and allow them in your firewall.
